On my 69 4 speed. the neutral safety switch in on the clutch pedal but is there one on the trany also? what is the rod on the end of the steering column where the output chaft is
The swicth on the trans is for the backup lights. The only "neutral" switch is on the clutch pedal on a 4 speed car.
The rod on the steering column is a reverse lockout. A cable goes from the trans to this. This way you need to have the car in reverse in order to get the key out and supposedly you can't shift out of reverse unless the key is turned. Primative safety device.
Thanks, that clears it up.I have a Painless harness and am adding circuits to it for a 69 vette. I bought a Flaming river column and it dont have the reverse lockout and I wont add it either. I will add the clutch safety switch circuit.

And this safety device works for about 3 years, or it is bypassed...
The "reverse lockout" (actually it is called the Anti-Theft Ignition, Steering and Transmission Lock in the OM) is really an anti-theft device, as the official name implies. Without the key in the ignition, you couldn't steer the car, take it out of reverse, or start the engine. Not very high-tech, but it kept the joy riders from pushing a Corvette around the block and hot wiring it. Maybe....
My "reverse lockout" is still working 39.5 years after the car left St. Louis. The trans has been out a couple of times and the engine removed; I put the linkage back the way it was intended and it still works.
Cheers,
Pete
