Just curious, guys. Did the original chrome oil cap on '68 427 Vette have the "SMC" logo stamped into it or not??? Also, I have seen oil caps that are ribbed in the dish area and some that are smooth. Also on the backside, there is a squared rivet that is dished. Top side - "S" stamped into the rivet. Is this correct for the '68 big block??? Pictures of a correct cap would be cool. Thanks in advance.

68 427 oil cap is chrome plated with an S rivet in the center.
According to the NCRS Technical Information & Judging guide: the 427 chrome plated cap has a wide flaring, a narrow rim, a large central depressed area, and a small central ridge with an S rivet in the center.

yep, you described it perfectly....in fact it was just in my hand...I put a set of Edelbrocks on the Vette years ago and the OE covers were in the basement so I dont care what NCRS mentions about it, I know this is real ...the 'S' might be from the OE manufacturer that I believe was Stant.....

Is it possible to post a picture of the cap. Thanks
Its identical except for the tiny circle logo near the center...and I looked all over the cap, that logo is none existent.... but what difference does it make, were the only ones that really knows...except the repo man that made them and the few people thats interested in this....
Just for the hell of it I went into the warehouse and checked my other BB pieces...The 67 L78 Camaro has the identical cap that the 68 Vette does. From there I went to the 68 396 Camaro. That too was the same..then to the 73 El Camino 454 and almost the same, but it had a rivet that was stamped together with a square finish rather then round as most rivets and the other 3 was finished with....Finally these pieces/cars were all new in my possession from day one factory equipped with the appropriate dress up kits supplied with SS models ...also non had the logo...4 out of 4 with no logos and all had the 'S' in the head of the rivets....
What does the logo represent and where did it come from? any idea....If it was important you would think at least one of my BB cars would have it,..but they dont and are '67-68 models with factory BB`s....
