Are the C3 frames stamped with vin #'s. Can I change out the frame and still have a numbers match car??
They are stamped with the VIN # in 2 places on the driver side of the frame. Unless the frame is in excellent condition the numbers are probably obliterated by rust. The numbers are very hard to read - they are stamped on the top of the frame rail approximately where the driver sits and at the top of the rear wheel arch. You need a mirror to see them when the body is on the frame.
Technically you will not have a numbers matching car if you swap frames, but unless you have an extremely rare car I would vote for the safety of a good frame as opposed to a rusty original. If you disclose the fact that the frame has been replaced in the event of a sale the buyer probably won't care and may value the car higher because it has a good frame. Most people are more concerned about having the original engine and transmission, both having the VIN # stamped on them.
I replaced my 72 4-speed frame with a 73 auto trans frame so it's obvious that the frame isn't original, but a future buyer can take the rusty original frame with him if he wants it. The VIN #s are long gone on the original frame.
I've never seen that photo showing the frame being numbered, got any more photos like this?
I love to see these cars being built.
Thank JohnZ. He posted the pic. I stole it.
The Corvette Restoration Guide Vol I and Vol II by Noland Adams has lots of C1 and C2 assembly line photos in them. Peter LiCastro's book, Birthplace of Legends has great pics.

Hi s69 & j89,
If you're interested, the NCRS website store has a book entitled THE CORVETTE FACTORIES. It's 192 pages, with 150 color pictures, and 150 black and white pictures. Many of the pictures are from the GM Archives. It follows production from Flint, to St. Louis and Bowling Green.
I haven't seen it but you may want to check it out! I'll bet it has a lot of pictures you'll find interesting!
Regards,
Alan
