Default Tank Sticker Pics

I pulled the spare tire and carrier today on my '74. Reached up with my camera and snapped some pics to see if the tank sticker was there. There is a piece of paper there, can't tell if there is any printing on it or not.
Are they laid out flat or folded? This appears to be folded to me.
What is the best way to drop the tank? I know that the exhaust is partly in the way, both pipes are fully welded from the collector at the headers back, after the mufflers is a hanger will removing this give enough play for the tank?

Lucky you, I wish mine was still on the tank. The PO replaced the tank, so the paper is gone.

if it is actually folded, you will be in better shape being able to read it when removed

I took mine off the other day. It was laying flat, I took the muffler off and reached over the frame, was real easy but my muffler was easy. Very little writing left that can be read. If yours is folded in half, maybe better, good luck.

Hi J,
I believe if you're serious about saving what's there you should drop the fuel tank.
You really only get one chance to get the sheet off, and you need to get a very good look at what's there to decide how to proceed. Often if the tank is down you can gently brush and blow it clean enough to photograph the readable info so you at least have that if the sheet disintergrates while you're removing it.
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan

The plan is to drop the tank. Did get my hand up there today and the paper seems pretty solid, As Alan stated it's too important to not give it every chance.
What is the best way to drop the tank? Will disconnecting the hangers from the mufflers give enough play for the tank?

Dropping the tank is pretty easy. Moving the exhaust is the biggest challenge. My sticker required some tender work to get it loose from the tank- a big swath of paint/glue diagonally down the sheet from corner to corner was holding it on. I used a razor to gently cut it from underneath. It is now stored in a safe in an acid-free sleeve. You can see it on my album. It is great that you have yours, best of luck in removing it. Hint- take several pics before you start.

I was lucky, mine was super brittle so I scanned it before storing it in a plastic sleeve, go slow, its a great piece of documentation to have.

I got mine from my 73 when I pulled the tank out, the tank was starting to rust, so I figured it was time to replace it. The sticker was very brittle and very delicate. After you get to it be very careful as to how you remove it. It is held on with some type of glue, slowly use a razor blade and remove only a little bit at a time. After you get it off, I used a womans makeup brush, and an artists brush to remove the years of dust. After I got it cleaned up, I went and purchased 2 pieces of glass from Lowe's placed the sticker on one piece, laid a small bead of silicone around the edge, placed the second piece of glass on top, and laid a bunch of books on top until it was dry. Now I can show the sticker, and if for some reason I need to take it out, I can cut out the sealer. Also before I put the new tank in I replaced the sending unit, and rust proffed with a clear product that dried fairly hard, and is not real noticable.

I was looking (actually feeling) for a tank sticker and no luck from what I can reach. However, I noticed on the upper pass. side of the tank, there is a small GM label about 3 inches by 2 inches. It is a shipping label from GM.
I am assuming that this means my tank was already changed? I don't think that original parts would have a GM shipping sticker on them for the factory parts...correct?

Thanks ,
Greg.

Probably a replacement tank. The originals were manufactured by the O. L. Anderson Company.

Hi Greg,
My original tank had a small (about the size of a postage stamp) sticker with a part number on the tank side near the nipple for the fuel return line.
Regards,
Alan

I got lucky with my 72 LT-1. The first copy on the Tank was folded over and for the most part when unfolded readable. Took pics, dusted off with an air hose and removed and stored. Then when I was freshening up the interior I found a pristine copy folded and tucked between the tach and speedo.

Note the Job Number in the top right corner which I also found under the carpet, on the toe board of the firewall on the passenger side, and up under the rear deck above the gas tank.
