Default issue decoding vin

im working on a 1979 corvette and when i was trying to find the vin number to see what the options the car came with from factory , i ran into the simple issue that the car doesnt have any were the 1979 shop manual says they should be.... i have looked high and low from door jams to dashboards and fire walls and havent found a thing, the only thing i found was a california issued idetification number on the inner door jam on the drivers side.... its a 9 digit number and is the only thing i see that remotelly close to any sort of identification number.. its also has a widebody kit on it , which look some what like the
can-am cars, if that makes a difference... not a hundred percent sure what to do at this point , so any help will be huge.. thanks in advanced

Sounds like it might have a salvage title.

Even if you found the VIN it wouldn't tell you which options came with the car, other than engine type.

You likely have a "remanufactured" or "reassembled" VIN. It could be a salvage title, but I know my late model convertible conversion had a VIN plate attached to the LH door jamb, and I was told by the Michigan DMV that a car with major changes (I dunno, like cutting off the roof) required the remanufactured number in that state.

Hearing that the car you are looking at has a Can Am kit, likely with major body modifications, it sounds like the same deal.

NOTE: the original VIN should still be in the stock place on the LH inner windshield post, readable through the windshield.
