From memory>>> Mine had 2 "ears" that stuck out. Kind of like springs. As you pushed it into position the ears would compress and hold it in place. Maybe these plastic things you describe take the place of the ears?

Jay,

If, the one you just purchased fits...I would not sweat it. I doubt the judges are going to yank it out for closer inspection. They will look in this area for cleanliness....Glad you got the tail light lens you were after.

Stay in tune...

the problem with this one from ecklers is you don't haft to pull out the ash tray to see the holes punch in the sides of the ash tray just look in the ashtray to see if it is clean and you'll see the holes. its a small $ item so i'm going to get the correct one thanks

Those slots usually have a small, white plastic lens in them. Original 77-82 Corvette ashtrays didn't have them, but current replacement ones do. I think in some applications for that ashtray, a bulb was behind the lens, serving to light the ashtray. The Corvette never had this lit astray feature, though. I'm not aware of an ashtray from any of the Corvette vendors, that doesn't have these lenses.

Don't know how exact you want to be but notice the snuffer tab in
MDS3013's pic. It has a round opening. Replacement ashtrays (from CC and probably others) have a cross shaped opening.

Might help in searching for an original.

FWIW. you can lose up to 6 points on your ashtray and door. Again if it matters.
