I am not aware of any major car shows in the south of Germany (Munich, Heidelberg) in the mentioned time frame, they usally take place in the warmer seasons (it's not like Florida here ). But I could be wrong....

Suggestions of what to see depends on your preferences Heidelberg and Munich are both great cities for sight seeing, for drinking and eating and also to explore the surrounding areas (Heidelberg: the Neckar valley and Odenwald, Munich is close to the Alps). Near Heidelberg (about 20 miles away, highway) is a famous car and technology museum (http://sinsheim.technik-museum.de/) which is worth a visit.

But you should take your snow boots and warm clothes with you, we have much snow currently (but weather forecast promise a bit warmer weather and rain next week).

I enjoyed Heidelberg more than any other place I've been in Europe. I stayed at the historical Hotel Zum Ritter/. Walk across the old bridge over the river Neckar and up the hill for a great view of the Heidelberg Castle and Old Town area. The pub next to the hotel is very friendly and serves the best wheat beer I've ever tasted. I sampled a few others with the locals too. I wish I would have known about the Auto & Technik Museum. Oh well, next time.

Also 20 miles away but nearly opposit way is the "SisterMuseum of Sinsheim" in Speyer. Not so big but also interesting. And Speyer is more than 2000 Years old (but you cant see ;-)
I live their so I know its also nice to visit
Have a nice time

It's going to be winter in Germany this time of year (especially in the alps), I highly doubt there will be many car shows. But, while you're in Munich, the BMW museum is worth a couple hours, so you can get a car show flavor (no vettes). You'll probably go to the castles of King Ludwig (Neuschwanstein.. etc). Downtown Munich is good and the museums. There are several really nice alpine small towns like bayrischzell/ that will provide years of great memories if you stay there (ie. Bayren). Moving north, Rotenberg is great to see (definitely worth a day). If you go there, don't miss the torchure museum for a whole bunch of memories ...chastity belts, racks, shame masks... it's a hoot. You'll probably pass right by ULM which has the tallest DOM (cathedral) in I think all of Europe, at least one of the tallest ...the birthplace of Einstein. Thta's worth a hour. Going north, if you're flying in/out of Frankfurt, you'll be going by Stutgart. You could do the Mercedes and VW museums for more car show wonder. If you were heading way down to Fredrichshafen that's where the Blimps were made in WWII and still kept. I believe ZF (transmissions) are made there (verify though). Pretty cool museum there.

Oh, if you go north of Munich, there's the famous Nuremberg Ring. That's the famous racetrack GM runs vette prototypes on (as do others). Heidleberg is nice, but limit your time.

So many great sites. Berg Eltz is my wife's favorite castle becuase of it's setting:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burg_Eltz
http://www.burg-eltz.de/

If you're going north to former East Germany, there's the Trabant museum which I thought was kinda cool. Don't remember the town off top of my head but it's somewhere in the Dresden area. I could go on and on...

Lots of great places, so little time ...

Note: If it were me, I'd open up a Euro's bank account with Deutche Bank so you can have a foreign bank account (just in case). It's legit, you can xfer $$ on line and you get a 1099 for taxes ...good security just in case...
Do some online research. Hard to do remotely, easy to do at the bank. Do the first day in case you need to circle back later on to finalize things.

Lived in Wiesbaden for 25 years....No auto shows that I know of during that time frame BUT if you want to go to the best car museum ever...go on past Heidelberg Towards Stuttgart to Sinsheim you will see the auto/air museum on your left. I blows the socks off 99% of all others.
From Heidelberg it is only about 30 minutes if that...Remember its the the autobahn!! BTW From Frankfurt to Darmstadt (A-5) you will take this towards H-Berg is one of the best proving grounds for speed...I drove it daily on my way to work 120-135 MPH range...not a typo Mph not Kph.
