Who can handle them? Fedex freight....UPS.....is greyhound even a possibility for something like a hardtop? How much $$ can be expected to ship?
Do they need to be crated/boxed (which seems MORE awkward IMO), can they just be wrapped in plastic, or even left as they are with the corners padded?
Thanks, Joe
Joe,
Try FedEx....the top will need to be boxed / crated...doing anything less would be shear stupidity. Expect to pay about $100 depending on how you intend to ship it and to where...that price includes FedEx crating it for you...it could be a little more or a little less, depending on the above noted.
That is good information. I did not know Fedex would crate it for you...and the cost sounds surprisingly reasonable.
Thank you
Joe
I agree crating it is mandatory and Fed-Ex will box it up for you, I would think you'd want to insure it. Cost depends on weight and the size of the crate along with the distance it's being shipped.

Stay in tune...
I think your dreaming at $100. to crate and ship.
I think the cost to be at least half the $500.-$700. hardtops sell for.
Sell pickup only and do both the buyer and the seller a favor. No shipping damage or condition issues.
I just bought a mint hardtop out of MI. Originally I thought Grayhound bus lines would be my best option for shipping. The seller took it down to the terminal in Detroit and they said no. Evidently it is just over the size restriction. I scratched my head on this. I'm not sure the terminal just didn't want to handle it. I ended up having to ship it LTL via Dayton Freight Lines. The hardtop was crated at a "generic" retail shipping store for $120. I got the hardtop in perfect condition. I have worked for LTL carrier before and know what happens to freight in the back of a truck. It all worked out ok, but not an easy item to purchase and ship.

...well that is another story. My wife works for a logistics company. Shipping car body parts, LTL is a class 125. The higher the class, the higher the charges. The item is big and bulky, not weighing all that much. I would guess around $200. It would depend on how far the hardtop is going as well.
Sorry, I paid full price on the crating and got really lucky on the shipping...
Bottom line, pay for quality packaging/crating and shop around for a good price from an LTL carrier. Also, my hardtop was package/shipped standing up!
A few years ago, had one shipped to Canada from Wisconsin, USA. and if I remember correctly shipping was around $500.00 - $600.00 Canadian which included a very well constructed, fully enclosed wooden box, fully padded inside. Arrived here in perfect condition. Was for one of my friend's 68 Vette (that I used to own).
Definitely insure it. I shipped the top from my fathers 95 and they smashed the end of it up pretty good. It was UPS that packaged it and delivered it. They were good about refunding the buyer his money.
Try www.uship.com - I had a hardtop shipped from Omaha to Austin (about 850 miles) and I got it shipped for $350.
I got the quote from a guy from Lincoln, and his references were good, so I agreed to his price. I forgot what he does for a living, but he gets 4/5 days off in a row on a regular basis, and suppliments his income by make Uship runs.
The guy had a minivan, took out the rear seat, and had it wrapped in a blanket all nice and safe. He showed up at the sellers house, loaded it in the van, and braught it to my house.
Doing it this way also ment I didn't have to worry about crating it up.
