I'm having some trouble getting the dash out to gain access to the speakers. Any ideas? I haven't done a lot of interior work and I'm not sure if I need to pull harder or if I should be going about this another way.
If your dash is like my 71 the best way is like oldsarge stated. Remove the side pillars also the passenger dash (map pocket) and kick panel. Also ( I forgot what you call it ) the metal trim under the door so that you can remove the kick panel.
Make sure you take out all the screws before tuging on the dash. Take out all the screws that attach the to dash to the driver, center, and there is one underneath just to the right of the center console.
You might have to arc the dash a bit to remove it, Its not hard just take's time with all the screws.
What speakers are you putting in.
Actually, you can get the speakers changed out without removing the dash. Replace the right-side speaker first, so that you know exactly what that procedure will be. Drop the steering column a bit (remove...or just loosen the bracket retaining bolts under the dash; remove the dash pad attaching screw on the right side (under the dash pad); and pull the pad out a bit to release the clips from the bulkhead framework. Remove the attaching screws for the driver dash panel and drop it a bit, also. Now there is enough room to reach in under the speaker to remove the speaker frame and then change out the speaker. It was a PITA..but no more than trying to get the 40 year-old dash pad out without trashing it.
