Good evening. I am in need of assistance. I am looking to purchase a 1972 from a company called buyavette.net in Atlanta, GA (does anyone know anything about them?) and how do I know if I am getting a great deal? There are 2 1972's I am looking at (1 is black t-top and the other is steel cities gray convertible.) Pictures reflect the convertible has 2 blue ribbons from the National Restoration Society and is in great shape and the t-top does not have any ribbons and is in need of some work.
They are selling the t-top of $19,900 and the convertible for $28,900. Why is there such a large difference in price for the same year?
i never heard of them but they may be legit ,the price difference is about right the conv runs 5/10 thousand more here on longisland ,its proberly the same all over ,maybe the cond is also a lot better ,the conv is a rarer car as they made about 3times more coupes than conv
The vert is a nice looking car. One thing would worry me, the trim tag pic for the vert and the trim tag pic for the coupe is the same picture. Be careful.
Thanks for the help. I really appreciate it. Tom73 thanks for going to the website and looking. My husband and I will look at the tags very closely. I do know that when you do the walkaround video on the black car they state it is supposed to be steel cities gray but the previous owner painted it black.
Are you in the Atlanta area so you can inspect the car PERSONALLY with someone that is familiar with the nuances of Corvettes? I've been to the store you mention several times and I've seen cars that looked really good- until you get really close. And some look really good-- and are really good.
The pit falls of buying a 38 year old car sight unseen over the internet cannot be over stressed. Read the archives for tales of woe.
The NCRS ribbons in the grey convertible are meaningless and should be disregarded. They are Sportsman awards which are given to attendees at a meet, nothing to do with the car itself. Lots of incorrect replacement parts and very very pricey for a base engine/auto car that even the dealer rates as a 'nice driver'.
The black car is also over priced for a base engine/auto. Chrome is tatty and the undercarriage has been neglected.
I wouldn't consider either of these cars as a 'good deal' at the present pricing and without a personal inspection.
H C40,
I agree that you need to be very cautious. I, too, would encourage you consider having someone VERY knowledgeable look the cars over VERY carefully with you.
These may be terrific cars, OR, deep pits to fall into.
Regards,
Alan
PS: As Mike points out, it would be re-assuring for the convertible to have an NCRS Flight Award rather than the Sportsman Award. The car could well be a Flight caliber car, but the pictures and info don't tell nearly enough to determine that.
Thanks for all of the info. All of the responses are extremely informative and eye opening. I will definitely do my research on these cars (well maybe my husband will lol) before we buy and will definitely travel to wherever the car is to do a detailed inspection. My husband wanted to buy me my dream car for my birthday, but we will definitely wait and do way more research before buying.
