Default Shifter Needle ?

I have a 1977 Corvette. I removed the console parts along with the center guage cluster. Replaced some parts including the automatic shifter needle that shows what gear your in.

I see a small vertical post near the shifter handle in the console area. Does the shifter needle connect to this small vertical post that is sticking up. If so, what holds the needle on this post

When I removed the parts in the console the old needle came right up, but I don't know what held the needle on!!

Thanks

Larry

'71s didn't have indicator needles, so I have no specific knowledge...but it sounds like there must have been a spring on that post when you disassembled it.

If memory serves, the base of the indicator needle fits over the post.

Magic? Doesn't the lens trap the needle in place when you put it back together? There might be a push on retainer for the post.

The lens does trap the needle, but what about the other end, so when you shift say from park to reverse, the needle moves to the correct gear.

Thanks

Isn't there a tang on the side of the shifter?

Well I have a better picture than this one.. I'll keep looking.. but on the side of the sifter there is a pin and this pin fits in the slot on the plastic needle.. I'll keep looking and if I find it.. I'll post it for you.

Thanks everybody for the help.

Willcox, thanks for the diagram. I just want to make sure that the new parts are installed correctly the first time, so I don't have to remove the console again!!!

As long as this post is talking about the auto. shift indicator piece, does anybody need one, found it in my old 77 when I took the console apart and I never reinstalled it, its in perfect condition, also found the original fan/air cond. indicator plate from the same 77, it is in perfect condition although the paint is missing but there are no cracks or anything broken off, think I replaced it because of the missing paint, and I found a new auto shift indicator that the shift neddle slides up and down on, guess I never did use it on that 77, don't know for sure what years these are good for, maybe 74 or 75 to 77 or 79???? if anybody can use them send me a PM, only want the mailing charge, my guess would be $5.00.
