Last winter was getting the car running, now i am on to getting it cherry.
I am looking for a good head unit/speaker combo. My only thing is i dont want it too look too after market. I am not a NCRS guy or anything, i just thing that modern head units and edgy speaker grills look kind of cheesy in an old car. Just my opinion. Anyway does anyone have any experience with that service where they upgrade your old stereo? What about that classic looking new head unit, is that any good? What about speakers, whats out there that will work well with the new head units, that will fit under the factory grills, or slightly modified factory grills?
I think they make a repo version of the factory one that you can hook a Ipod or jumpdrive too and play mp3's
I ran some JL's in the front under the dash pad in my 69 and bought some black 6x9 speaker boxes for the back but too bad my sidepipes are so loud it really does not matter how loud you turn up the radio
Consider the kick panel location which is better. About all the dash location is good for is tweeters. I disconnected the dash speakers in the 70s.
Some 5.25 can be fitted to kick panel location behind the factory grilles. 4x6 fit & 5x7 may fit.
An old radio really dates a car. Our Corvettes are modern enough that a CD player looks great & works better.
I have this one with two 4" in the kick panels and two 7" in the back and it sounds great!
Looks cool to, i also think the modern radios look out of place...
I have a modern Kenwood that when turned off the face plate rotates to look like a radio delete (which my ZR-1 was originally anyway). I did make the mistake of putting Polk MOMO 6.5's in the rear which are more suited for a Lexus than a C3 vert.
I used these guys, I put my original 71 aside and bought another one on ebay, gave it to Steve at http://vintageautoradio.com/ and he took the OLD guts out and replaced it with NEW guts. The new unit has Ipod hook up AMP pre outs, I have polk 4x6 in the dash 6 1/2 in the kicks and a JL 8 inch sub in the jack compartment. And AAA in my wallet.
We have developed a new 4x6 speaker for the dash of the 70-82 Corvettes. This speaker will outperform anything on the market for bass response in a 4x6, works extremely well with modern radios or conversions and is the correct impedance (8-10 ohm) to work with the original Delco radios. See [URL="http://www.turnswitch.com/speakers.htm"]
No metal was cut at all in the installation every thing can go back
to stock in a day. I put all the orig parts away I bought kick panels
from Wilcox and a storage compartment door on ebay which is
actually orig.
And yes the are Polk 651 they fit perfectly I also purchased the foam
cups from Cruchfieild for around the magnet and speaker.
I measured 10 times before cutting.
The Sub is a JL W 8 inch don't think there is enough air space in the box for a ten and the 8 sounds great I am only using half the power from the sub.
I made the sub out of fiberglass using the jack compartment as a
mold. I made a box out of card board and laid down aluminum foil
all over it, then glassed it. The top is mdf.
The Amp is in the battery compartment out of site. I made a tray for the Amp so that I could attach the amp without screwing into the car.
This is the way to go it sound great and looks stock and there is plenty of room for the t-tops
I will post updated pics soon.
Where did you put the battery, if the amp is in the battery compartment or did you mean you put the amp in the 3 rd compartment. That is what I did but have to leave the compartment door slightly open to let the heat out or the amp will shut down in protection mode. Yup in a vert it plays at 11.
Possibly a dumb question but do the factory replica radios like the one from Wilcox actually have cassette decks included? The description for the Wilcox and others I've seen include "fast forward and reverse, auto reverse" etc. What possible use would there be for a cassette deck or am I misunderstanding this?

There is no cassette. I have an old IPod Shuffle with about 75 tunes on it. I have a Nano as well but it is difficult to view/control while driving. And given where you live you will know that there now is a law against using handheld devices in an automobile. The fine is $155.00. I don't have to look at the Shuffle; I keep pushing the Forward/Back buttons until I find the song I want. Nevertheless, I believe I could be charged. We shall see.
There are CD jacks on the back if you wish to go that route.
TURBOJET,
I've been considering the Polks in the kick panels but I am concerned there might not be enough room between the speaker grill and the clutch pedal. I don't want to be hitting the speaker with my feet. Has this been a problem for you?
Thanks,
Ken
I also noticed that there are two models, "standard" and "slim mount" Which did you use?
