For those who have their C3's registered in PA as antique: How strict was the DMV with you when you applied for your plates? For example, I have heard stories about antique reg's being denied due to improper mirrors, shaved FM antenna, a front vanity license plate being on the car, windows being down in photos sent to the DMV, etc. Anyone want to chime in here? I'm getting ready to register my '77 as antique with PA DMV and want to hear other people's experiences. Thanks a ton, Neal
They can be and are **** about approval of classic and antique plates. I was denied the first time for classic plates and had to resubmit because of the dealer installed luggage rack. Have a buddy that applied for classics for his 80ish Z/28, denied because of the chrome mags he had on the car.
A safe rule to follow is anything aftermarket or not FACTORY installed on the exterior of your car will probably be scrutinized. You will need to submit 4 pics of the car one from each side/end.
I have heard more stories of trouble with them than stories of sailing right through. But so far I haven't heard a story yet that they didn't get the reason for denial correct. They actually seem as though they have some sort of documentation they go by....
Anyway, if you adhere to the 2nd paragraph above you shouldn't have any trouble getting your plate. HTH
They are EXTREAMLY picky about what they will accept. I've heard of people being denied because of a "vanity" plate on the front of the car( one of those that say corvette-chevy-454powered-ect). As Bric said, mags are out, even non-original colors will get you axed. I'm not saying it has to be the correct color red, but it can't be a color they didn't produce that year, or have flames, graphics ect.
I didn't have any trouble with my 69 even with hooker sidepipes, but you are correct no after market wheels and you must have your windows up in the pictures. I have a buddy with a 68 camaro and they refused him with aftermarket wheels. He borrowed my ralley wheels retook pictures and got the plates.
I did mine a year ago and had no problem at all, the car had an antique tag when i purchased it but it made no difference I still had to do the 4 photo deal.
Great....I just painted mine steel cities gray and obviously that wasn't offered in '77. All I can do is hope is gets through. Other than that, I have no luggage rack and my wheels are stock aluminums so that should be ok. I'll be screwed if I can't go antique! Anyone know if a '77 is supposed to have a passenger and driver side outside mirror or just a driver's side? BTW how long did the antique registration process take...from application to plate? Thanks, Neal
As long as there was some sort of silver or grey in that year you will probably be ok. They may not check on a standard color like grey anyway, but some kind of crazy purple, or lime green would raise eyebrows.
I had no trouble with my 3. 4 corner pix. But all mine were stock. It is when the do not look stock that you have a problem.
Same here. My 79 was bone stock, I took four photographs of each side, front and back and filled out the form. Bingo, I got my Classic plates in about three weeks. Maybe I'm just lucky ?

Well here's hoping I can say "Bingo" in four weeks like you did! Lights up or down in the pics?
mine were down. if by chance you know someone with a similar car you can send pics of there car. i agree with whitehause about the color.
Well I know EVERYONE on corvette forum....and you are all my GREAT friends...especially my fellow forum members with 1977 corvettes who have a picture from all four sides of you car in good light, with the windows up, factory appearance, and no license plate(s).....who might like my address to send those pictures to me in a padded envelope so I could do nothing more than hang them in my garage
