Are all C3 gas pedals stiff--by that I just mean that it's not as soft/smooth as my newer Corolla or Pathfinder. Is that just the way they were, or is there something I can do to smooth it out?
If you are comparing it to a modern Toyota (and that's certainly not something I'd like to compare any other cars accelerator to) then its gonna definitely feel a bit different.
I guess I've never really noticed it being "stiff". Spring perhaps? Old cable? If anything its too close to the tunnel and brake IMO. Thank God I have small feet! I cannot imagine someone with clown feet driving a C3 without riding brake and accelerator at the same time.
Anyway, I'd look at perhaps replacing the cable if you think its too stiff. That might be where the hang up is.
Normally there is a larger return spring over a smaller spring at the carb & may not be positioned properly. You can disconnect springs to check that cable moves smoothly.
Mine is not stiff (nor stock). One issue I had one time was the ig. shield cut through the cable shield to contact the cable.
If someone had that happen for ex., he may have increased the spring tension instead of solving the issue.
A PO may have put a stiffer-than-stock return spring on the linkage. Remove that spring completely to see how free the cable action feels. If there is no binding/dragging in the cable, then just buy a lighter spring to replace the one you have. If it is binding up, that's why someone put a stiffer spring on it. To get it right, buy a new cable and return spring.
