Default BirdCage Repair

How difficult is it to get to the birdcage to make repairs? Ive read posts of frame off resto's but am not sure of whats involved in getting to the birdcage. What are the steps? Is there a way that I could just get to the birdcage for repairs and thats it? how long would it take? Id just like to do it for peace of mind.

This is what it takes to get to the entire birdcage.

There are folks that do frame off restorations that due to the difficulty, do not repair the bird cage, they may fix the rot that is obvious with patching, but as you see from the picture above, almost total disassembly has to be done to do it right. you have to cut the body off from around the cage.
even claimed 'restored' cars may have a bad bird cage.
The repair itself is easy, and you can get used cages on fairly good shape. but the total disassembly, cutting the body off, and re-assembly + painting is very labor intensive.
in the end, you will learn every nut and bolt in your car.

If you want to do it RIGHT, you need to sandblast the entire cage as well.

Extremely difficult since you are virtually dismantling the entire car.

No. You can't "just get to" it.

Purchase the assembly instruction manual (AIM) and pay particular attention to everything which hangs off the birdcage.

Andy: You can look at this link to see how the birdcage should look like after repair.
