Default Stamp Pad Question

I have always heard that the stamp pad should be bare metal, not painted.

But I thought that the engine was painted after it was assembled.

So, which statement is wrong?

If it is painted after assembly then the stamp pad would be painted.

If the stamp pad is bare metal then the engine was painted prior to assembly.

....I've read in the past on the NCRS Board that they put a piece of masking tape over the pad before the engine was painted.

...I believe the "Corporate Blue" engines did not have the tape applied on the pad at the time of painting.

Paul is correct that the wide pad engines did not have painted pads as delivered to the St. Louis assembly plant. Depending on the era in question or who you listen to the pad was either protected with a piece of tape or was wiped clean with a rag. Same difference.

In the judging manual for 78, it states that date and suffix were stamped prior to painting. The pads were not painted or if painted it was removed with a solvent. They did concede some left painted however.

The vin derivative was stamped prior to installation thereby "cutting" any paint on the pad. So this number should have no paint in them.

I guess you could deduct that if the suffix is painted ok. If the vin is painted then the block or pad has been touched up.

FWIW because some dont find it interesting

So, for a SB car, the date/suffix should have paint in the stamping, but the S/N stamp should not?

Much like my favourite brand of adult diaper, depends.

Tom73 is asking about pads but does not specify which year. Later C3 pads were left painted with no effort to remove it at all. Earlier pads had little or no paint. Some early pads had paint in the engine stamping, some didn't. Confused now?

Only if they didnt remove the paint at the time. However you would never know which ones these were. I think it deals more with the vin numbers. No paint ever.

Refering to 78 & 79

Clear as mud!!!!!!!!!! Sometime very early in 77 they went from the Chevrolet Orange, to the Corp Blue engine color. It was at this time the engine pad's started to be...and left.... painted. Prior to this, they were all...unpainted.

I just went through all of this for a friend with a 77 getting his car prepped for flight judging...and the pad (if the engine color is blue) is painted...in addition the trim tag as well. This information came down from the NCRS...and at this point in time is unquestionable! We will find out in a couple day's how unquestionable it really is. I shall repost here on the outcome / post flight judging 3/28/10.

Stay in tune....

Gregg,

Be aware that there are very very few dedicated late C3 judges especially at a chapter meet- simply because so few cars of this generation are submitted for judging. If the judges are not aware of the painted/unpainted issue they may innocently take a deduct for the pad. You might want to print off the discussion from the NCRS board and keep it handy.
