Replacing Lower Trim Plate and E-brake cover
I am getting ready to replace the lower trim plate, the lenses, and the emergency brake cover in my '79. Looking at the Assembly manual am I correct in assuming that the console side plates need to be removed first? Anyone else tackled this. It does not look hard, just time consuming. Any help is appreciated.

The console bolts to the gauge cluster, the PB cover and is also bolted to brackets on the tunnel. You can't get to these bolts without removing the side panels. There are 3 screws holding each side panel in place. A couple screws can be a bit of a pain to remove with the seats in, but it's not all that dificult.

For as long as it takes to pull the seats, I'd take them out. It's one of the first things I do when something goes haywire inside the car. One screwdriver in the back pocket can really ruin your day not to mention your nice leather seat cover.
