I would like some help... life is running faster than my vette right now, so she's going on the market, but since I made a misinformed purchase all those years ago, I'm planning on selling it as a parts car - mostly due to frame damage, but I wonder about the bird cage
I think it's not good... but I'd like some opinions. Thanks to you all for your help!
Looks like a lot of metal (strength) has come down from the cowl/lower windshield area, and it also looks like the lower section of the rocker and body mount is trying to separate from the pillar itself.
Just looking at it I feel it is safe to say the windshield frame, a-pillars, and rockers have been compromised. Overall I'd say not good, but I have seen worse, where there wasn't much left in the bolt pocket.
Poke at it and see how soft it is....maybe it's still solid there, even though up above it is obviously bad. And keep it in a dry location!
There are so many different areas these cars can rust, windshield frame, body mounts, rocker channels, body brackets, doors, frame etc.
Sometimes one or 2 areas may be rusted and the rest of the car is solid. my 73 had rusty frame and rocker channels but windshield frame and pillars were in great shape so it was worth saving.
Others are just parts cars. A thorough inspection is required for each one.
Not to get off the original post, but when the dash is out of the car can the whole birdcage under the windows (basic place they rust) be seen and inspected for bad damage?
Pretty bad at first glance, but I have also seen worse. The base portion of the A pillar is almost gone. Windshield surround and rockers need to be looked at. Birdcage parts can be bought at many of the parts houses, but if all these areas are bad forget it.
Yep, I had already vacuumed out a bunch of rust chips from each of those pillars... I'll see what else I can coax out of there tonight.
I figured out this was basically a driving parts-car years ago, but decided to get as much enjoyment out of a bad situation as I could... you know, to take the sting out of the resale price hit I'm about to take.
Hi LS7V,
You can make an assessment from the dash board side but won't know the whole truth until the front clip is off and the windshield is out so you can examine carefully from that side.
Regards,
Alan
Birdcage could be repaired if you fancy a project, but unless you love the car more than life itself or can do it yourself, costs will be unjustifiable.

I would love to fix it myself, but I would need $$ for tools, then $$ for parts, and... well like it has been said..."it's only and 80". There's no special attachment to this car... I actually hate it's not a 4 speed. ....SOOO It's officially posted for sale as a parts car on a popular online classified ad site
