My dad has a red '73 convertible, and we're looking at new wheels for his car.
Currently he's running 225/70 15s all around and considering moving up to 245/45 all around with 17x8 wheels.
I know the wheels/tires will fit - not the issue.
The big question:
Not knowing exactly which brakes he currently has (assume stock or very close), would he likely need to upgrade the brakes if moving from the current 15" size to the 17" size in order to stop?? Anything else to think about?

The current brakes, if working good, should be good enough, stock. 4 piston calipers, good disk size. Duntov uses the stock set up to road race, they stand up well. The 2500 it would cost to move to an after market set up could be spent better else where, like on a rack and pinion conversion. C.

Thank you for the reply. Most helpful!
Now we just have to decide on the right wheels. Coddington makes some nice ones - I think we're leaning towards these:
changing wheels should have no affect on the brakes at all. What a larger wheel does do is ALLOW for bigger brakes, should you choose to upgrade them. BTW, I like that wheel a lot!

Our goal in choosing wheels is to find something that is classic, not gawdy, and fits the style of the car. These in 17x8 with 245/45 should accomplish that, I think.
Personal preference only, but we wouldn't want anything larger than 17".
