Default 1968Early and 1968Late

I am in the process of replacing the engine harnesses and came across a question I do not know the answer to. The Transistor ignition harness is sold as either a 1968Early or a 1968Late. I cannot find anywhere that explains how I can determine which mine is.

If i go by serial number in the vin 401295 it would be in the first 2 months of production therefore an early. Therefore I am going to assume it is a 1968Early

I haven't had to replace the wiring harness on either of my 68's, but noticed on my last 68 (which was produced in June 68) that it had all of the late model changes (i.e. pull handles on door panels, moved side mirrors, late model 68 seats). When next to other 68's at cruises & shows it seemed like all of the late model changes were implemented by April. However, as I understand it, the 68 production line was a work in progress and changes were made as needed.

I know this doesn't answer your question but may put you in the ballpark. Here are the starting serial numbers per month.

Sept - 400905
Oct - .403410
Nov - 405682
Dec - 407922
Jan - 410386
Feb - 412647
Mar - 415000
April - 417676
May - 420928
June - 423978
July - 428566

There were so many running changes in 68 it depends on the particular part whether it is early or late. It's a pretty safe bet that yours is early with that serial number. However, I would want to clarify that from whomever you're ordering from (Lectric Limited?). They may have the answer if you provide them with your VIN.

Per your post, early and late will not apply to your '68 VIN; it will apply to the transistor ignition option and the wiring harness you're after. I am guessing there was a running change for the TI during the '68 model year.

The '68 AIM might show a revision date on the TI AIM page as a possible clue.

Contact the vendor of the wiring harness and ask them their definition of "early" and "late" as it applies to the harness.
