Default Timing marks??

Ok on my harmonic balancer there is a grove across it. Is that 0 or TBC? Just wondering. I want to check the timing but there no other marks on it beside that. Can i buy a timing marker tape and put on it lining the 0 up with the groove? Thanks for any help..

You need the timing tab. On early timing covers, it is welded to the cover. On later (8" I think) dampers, it bolts to the timing cover.

The scribe mark on the damper should be the index for 'top dead center' TDC when it aligns with the "0" degree mark on the timing tab mounted on the timing chain cover (at about 1 o'clock as you are looking at the front of the engine). If there is not another metal "indicator", having a "0" line and several scribed lines on either side of it, mounted on your timing cover, you cannot set TDC using that method.
