Sorry for the newbie question, but what's the best way to seal in between the diff & its cover?
I have the gasket. Do you wipe some diff oil on the flanges, put the seal in between and torque it down?
Or do you leave the gasket (new) out and use the RTV sealant?
Orrrr do you use some RTV and the gasket as well?
I have always used High tack. It is a sticky red spray in a can made by Permatex. Coat both sides let it sit for a few minutes then install the gasket and torque it up. Never had a leak this way. I do the water pump gaskets like this also.

IMO this is good but if I have the time I prefer Permatexing the gasket to the cover and letting it sit over night, then apply sealer to the other surface and torque up. The reason I like this way is the gasket sometimes will try to squeeze out when torquing .
If overnight is a problem then using the spray that Gordon recommended is the best way because your less likely to get too much sealant on.
