Default Headlamp Open Speed

70 vert, when I activate the headlamps, one opens (drivers side) then the pass follows. Shouldn't they open and close together? Your thoughts? Thanks !

The drivers side is cloest to the vacuum source (reservoir) so it will usually open first with the pass side following shortly behind.

Yes, they should open at virtually identical speed and timing. They did when new. Mine still do.

Hi M70,
I believe your 70 has 2 headlight relays, 1 for each headlight actuator.
So your slow passenger's side headlight door could be caused by the relay or the actuator.
Since it does open, I'd think it could well be the seals in the actuator, which can be replaced. If you have a vacuum source and gauge (like a Mighty-Vac) you can test the relay and actuator and determine what's going on.
Sometimes.... just cutting a 1/2" off the ends of the hoses improves the seal and MIGHT fix your slow light.
Regards

I put new seals in both of my headlight actuators and the left one opens a little before the right one. I'll probably spray some lube onto the valve rods to see if that helps but as long as they both open and close I'm happy. I have more important things to fix at the moment.

My driver's side goes down last, but I'm not so sure how they work when going up. Both headlights are routed through the drivers side actuator...I think. I don't know if that plays a factor, but it's a thought.

my open passenger, then drivers, always have my fingers crossed.
There's nothing worse than leaving the drive-in and having to get out and pull one up

Greetings, sorry for a late reply but I was looking for some actuator answers and came across your post. I have a '71 vert. I recently picked up some parts from Dr Rebuild and like their products. Seems to me that repairing the vacuum system is more tedious than anything. I'm in the middle of wipers and headlights right now but must say that the guide to headlight repair put out by Dr R is straight forward and takes a lot of the mystery out of this endeavor. Also, they put out a "placemat" looking embossed diagram that sheds a lot of light on your project and makes diagnosis/hose routing a lot easier. I tracked down my right headlight problem in no time. Good luck with yours.

They should. They do on my 80; on the '68, the right lags behind the left about a second.

I can live with it.
