i finally put the cigarette lighter in the stock position and i have a ground problem. the car is a race car and most of the interior is modified. i found out today that the cigarette lighter is being grounded through my shifter somehow. when i move the shifter over what ever i plug into the cigarette lighter looses power.
so how is the cigarette lighter supposed to be grounded? and any advice for me will be appreciated. i posted i picture to show u what im lookin at.
Thanks
Anthony
when i move the shifter to the right it looses power but when i let go its fine.
The original ground feeds the cluster etc from the drivers side birdcage.
Nothing stopping you from running a new wire to the birdcage, finding a loose black ground wire, or tapping into a black ground closer.
Well, you have to find a 'black wire' that is large enough to handle the current drawn by a cigarette lighter. I would suggest that you run a #12 awg black wire from the sheetmetal (which connects with the lighter housing) to the birdcage or chassis framework.
...so how is the cigarette lighter supposed to be grounded?...
The stock lighter grounds on the console trim plate off the tranny tunnel wiring. As you have determined, your shifter is providing the ground when it bumps/touches the trim plate or from your toggle switches.
