cruising around today and as i was getting on expressway a crotch rocket getting on in front of me nails it so i got on it and was surprised that i stayed pretty close to him until 120 mph when i backed off. anyways i then noticed my radio was no longer playing. i checked the fuse of course but its not blown. is there another fuse behind radio? its a stock radio. any idea what to check next?
There's only a fusible resistor inside the radio to protect the big transistor on the convector (two of them if you have the stereo model). It's pretty doubtful that burned out.
The two quick checks are: unplug the power connector and check for 12 volts on each outer pin (one is the dial lamp so remember that the dash light switch controls it) - the center pin is ground. If both +12's are good, unplug both speakers from the Y harness (for mono radios) and use your ohm meter to do a continuity check on each speaker. Those routinely fail. This is remotely possible: your on-off switch, or even half of it (two sections in those), may have conveniently failed (corrosion is common in the 68-72's switches and is repairable without replacement almost 100% of the time).
What you did should not have affected any of those items that I mentioned above but they give you a starting point.
Or maybe the sound just hasn't had time to catch up with you yet. If you hear a siren in the next couple of hours.... well, never mind.
hi JERRY. the radio light does work if that tells you anything. ill check what i can. im not too good with this stuff. thanks for taking time to explain all this, NUTSY.
