i finnally narrowed down my radio not working to the speakers after much help from JERRY THE RADIO GUY, THANKS, JERRY. now i need help on changing the stock speakers. its a 72 coupe. do i take the top dash off or do i do it from underneath? any help appreciated. thanks.
Hi N,
The right one is reachable with things in place.
The left is another story.
I was afraid of putting too much pressure on the top pad lifting it a bit so I dropped the column and driver's side pad to be safe. Easy access then.
It's been up and down more than a few times recently so it's gotten easier (no it hasn't , that's a lie!) The last 2 times were because I'm stupid!
Regards,
Alan
Excellent Brian! You worked diligently on testing all those things and it's nice to see that you succeeded. Heck, you're a junior radio guy now.
You will like those new 4X6 speakers from turnswitch.com. They're not even on his web page yet - pretty new and they are superb (if any 4X6 can be described as superb).
Holler if you need more help. Enjoy the tunes!

cant wait to get the speakers JERRY. thanks again. hi ALLAN, GREG from turnswitch.com was really nice and explained what i need to do. he said for the pass. side remove the lower dash pad which i did and its right there. not even 5 minutes work. he said driver side is tough. said drop steering column like you did. then pull gauges panel out enough to get behind it. did you do this ALLEN? or will dash pad removal be easier? thanks.
Hi Nutsy,
I agree with Paul.... you're taking a chance ANY time you put pressure on the top pad.... dropping the column and dash pad 2"-3" gives you enough room to get at the speaker is more work but safer.

Alan
At the time I replaced the speakers in 2008 I had another little job on the go (heater core). In 2009 I used Alan's technique to replace a tach cable. Works fine.
In the pic note (lower left) the broken gauge bezel. That's a $90.00 mistake.
Hi Paul,
At least when you break the bezel in your 74 you can by a correct replacement..... when you need one for a 70-71, the reproduction is only 'close', and is easy to spot as a repro for those that it matters to.

Alan
these thing are delicate, thats for sure. i took the bracket off the steering column but the steering wheel only droped about 1 inch. after taking the screws out of the lower driver side dash i can only get left side to come out about 2 inches. the right side of drivers dash will not come out at all. is there something holding it? im afraid to force it. also do you change it through the space between the upper dash and lower dash or from underneath? my car has air if that matters. i also found oil on my steering column that is coming from a coupling to the oil pressure gauge. now i have another job.

well, i got my new speakers today. there in and car is back together. i couldnt fit my big hands in there so my wife put the drivers side in for me. her hands are now all scratched up. shes a great helper on everything i do. the tach housing that i cracked an ear on closed up nicely when i put dash back so it will stay that way. i tightened oil pressure gauge line so i hope it stopped leaking. will change carpet this winter. just wanted to thank everyone for there greatly appreciated help. NUTSY.
