I have been looking at this as well and have been a bit confused by all the threads etc on it but in the end I think I am almost there.

Original tires were about 27" tall so my 71 currently has 215/70/15's fitted that are 26.9" tall

many people use 225/70/15 that are 27.4 " tall so if you aim to be around the 27" mark your fairly close to original height.

By using this calculator.....

http://www.rimsntires.com/rt_specs.jsp

The closest tires in 18" were 245/45/18 at 26.7" tall (around that width)

Many people go for tires that are much less than 27" and they look fine once the car is lowered but all depends on what your after.

As for the offset I believe 4" offset would be same as original so 4.5" would place an 8" rim half an inch further in than original.

Well at least that's what i have been able to work out from my research

Regards

Craig

4 inch is the stock back space. You can get away with 255/45/18 for back, this is 27 inch diameter. You will have to drop to probably a 245 for the front width. Check the tire calculator and find out what profile you will need probably a 40 or 45 series.
If you go with the 4.5 in bs, your tires will be tucked in .5 inch closer to the frame.

All good info here. If you want to use the same sizes front and rear the 245/45-18s should work front and rear with no issues. If you are willing to maybe run bigger in the rear than the front and don't care about being able to rotate buy two 255/45-18s for the rear and try one on the front (make sure you try both sides). If it fits buy 2 more and you can have 255s all the way around. If not go with the 245s in the front and you should be good to go.
