I got this for my son for Christmas. I don't know if it does real time RPM but I suspect you would have a hard time reading any digital display in real time because the numbers would change too fast.
I use AE (AutoEnginuity) in conjunction with my laptop. It's a little more expensive than the ScanGauge but it has some features that I don't mind paying extra for. If you are curious here is their website: http://www.autoenginuity.com/
my 76 ray is correct, a digital RPM gauge does change numbers quite a bit so it's pretty hard to read. The DashDaq system will convert the digital information into analog (sweep gauge) form to make it easier to read. You can customize the display to show all kinds of info so it's really a multi featured tool.
The Scangauge is pretty good as well but the display is pretty simple. Should be able to read rpm though.
The AE software has data logging features. Depending on what you are doing, you can log the rpm along with several other things to see how things such as vehicle speed or load affects the engine systems. You also have some speed calibration features as well (on some models).
Good luck, I am sure there is something out there that fits your needs.
I had a AutoXray until just recently(stolen). It worked verywell & ran realtime parameters.
You can find a decent one in your local pawnshop, craigslist or fleabay
I use the Equus 3100 Innova CanOBD2 scanner on my LS1 and LS7. I had another scanner previously that worked on the LS1 but not the LS7 because of the CAN protocol. This one is what I was using with just the LS1 and it worked fine - Link
For a LS1 conversion you usually need to disable some things and change other things. Something like HPTuners of EFILive might be a better choice, especially if you want to modify things in the future. Neither option is inexpensive but you will be able to tune the car while driving.

Thanks,
Right now I'm on the short on cash leash. I'm leaving it stock for the time being.
I'd like to have the EFI live and may go with that sometime in the future.
