i never even knew you could try to remove a C3 engine from the front. i guess that shows how programmed i have been all my life, lol!! i've only seen it done from the side (using the standard hoist method and not one of the exotic ones captioned in posts above, lol)
I wish I had a picture of a buddy of mine's makeshift hoist he put together. He pulled an engine (V8, 304 cid) out of a lifted Jeep CJ5 by using 5 8x8 beams. He criss crossed two of the 8x8's for each side of the frame of the hoist and positioned them about 10 feet apart. He then placed the 5th 8x8 resting on the top of the two frame pieces where they intersect (accross each outside frame). He drilled holes in each lower leg and drove steel rods (capped with large washers and nuts) into the ground to stabilize it. He then hung a chain hoist from the center beam. It actually worked super nice because he then just took it apart and had a huge bonfire with plenty of brewski's.
Problem today is that the price for the lumber may surpass what a cherry-picker would cost. I don't know. I cheated and pulled the front clip off mine and will put the new engine in before the clip goes back on (but I'm doing a frame-off).
I don't have pictures, but when I had the body off, and was ready to install the motor,
it was a holiday weekend and I had no lift.
So I jacket up the frame on 1 side, rolled the motor under the frame on a short engine stand,
set the frame back down, jacked up the frame to line up with the motor.
and installed the motor mounts, no lift required, all done by myself.
Cherry picker from the side with swivel casters on all four wheels so it can be moved in all four directions and the jack stand to the rear of the front wheel so it doesn't get in the way. NO PROBLEM !
On my 68, I pulled the engine and 4 speed transmision as a unit with an engine hoist from the front and then installed it the same way with no problems.
Do later models have longer noses that prevent this and therefore require removal from the side?

No, just the cherry picker booms are getting shorter. Same thing when you go to the groceryl store, the price keeps going up and the sizes keep getting smaller.

That's funny, 'cause it's the reverse for me - I've always pulled my Vette (C3) engines from the front - didn't know you could do it from the sides!
