Drive a few C3s before you form an opinion on the series.
Big difference between one that's been maintained well or better yet had a body off restoration and one that has just been prettied up to turn a quick buck.
Fresh paint, interior, and a new set of tires have been the cause of too many nightmares.
Good luck with your search.
I drove another 80 a short while before I found mine. That other 80 was a piece of you know what. It drove terrible, rode like it had 2x4's for springs, and rattled everywhere. It stumbled and popped and had no power. The transmission was a slush box. Luckily I have driven many a C3 so I new it was the car, not the C3 series of cars. If someone drove this as their first C3, they would never look at one again.
My 80 had been in storage for a very long time and was a low mile car. It is very tight, almost no rattles, it handles well, although not as well as a C4, but I will get to that point. I can blow the doors off most any C4, or C5 for that matter, unless they have done as much work as I have. I drive my 80 whenever I can. It has been trouble free and even gets decent mileage (if I stay out of the go pedal). If someone was to drive my C3 as their first or many of the C3's on this forum), they would have a much different opinion about C3's.

When I was a teenager and the C4s came out, I was stricken at once. Not really in a good way, I was like "Oh man, what did they do to the Vettes!?!" It was such a jump in styling. But the C4s are growing on me now as I get older and the nostagia effect kicks in. But I still love the Shark best.

We have both an '81 and '86 and to drive it's always the '86 for comfort and fuel mileage. To show and look cool it's always the '81 but man is it hard on the fuel and the body.
C3s are 50s technology. They rattle, they rust and they burn a lot of gas, especially if you do things to make them run faster. But they look cool and are a lot of fun.
By contrast, the C4 is a modern car. It's superior in every way to the C3 but it doesn't have the wow factor as it drives by.
I own a '77 C3 and I'd love to own a C6. Waiting for the C7. But I'll keep my old C3.
