Default 72 Interior question

My 72 Trim tag shows 42L for interior but I don't or can't fine a 42L anywhere. All I can find is 421. Could the L (and it is an L) mean 1 or what is the deal? It is a pile carpet not loop. Tan Color. I need new carpet and being new to C3's I could use your help. Thanks in advance

For 1972 interior code 421 was for the Saddle Deluxe interior and came with Leather seats, deluxe door panels and cut pile carpeting. All interior codes were a 3 digit number so I can't explain why yours is different. For carpeting I used Al Knoch and was very pleased with the results. I heard that Wilcox, who is a suppoting member of this forum, is also very good.

Hope this helps

If that is the trim code it must be 421 which is dark saddle delux leather trim. It must be a poor stamping of the trim tag. What interior is in it now?

Yes. Ls were sometimes swapped for 1s, but you usually find the quirk after '72. You have saddle leather. There was no saddle vinyl in '72.

Where did you get this information? Everything I've looked at says that both Saddle leather and vinyl were available in 1972.

Yes. My bad. I can't read my Black Book with my new glasses.

RVAZQUEZ & Garage-Ghost....I'm still laughing...Took another look at my Black Book. I can't blame my new glasses. The 417 S/V entry is the last one on the line...I had my thumb over it.

I've had some question if it was a real LT-1, and if it really came with A/C .... but never if it really came with SADDLE VINYL SEATS! LOL

In '72, the Chevy Engineers finally relented and allowed A/C to be installed on LT-1 engines. Of course, they were detuned with lower compression ratio, retarded timing, AIR pump and other emissions 'stuff'...so it probably couldn't wind as tight as the earlier year LT-1's did. I think there were about 600 '72 LT-1's with A/C [that came from the factory]. I [also] think there are probably more than 600 '72 LT-1's with A/C today!! Hopefully, yours is legit.

The lower compression and HP of LT-1's after 1970 is common knowledge. But its still a bullet proof, solid lifter engine with forged components ("Special High Performance") I think you've got your thumb over one of the statistics in your Black Book also. There were believed to be only 240 LT-1's with A/C produced in 1972. And yes, mine is legit. Sorry to hijack this thread. And I wish leather WAS standard then! I've got every option except that and the rear defrogger.

Well, the "600" error was an error of memory...because I didn't go look up the 'correct' answer. Yes, it was 240 units built that way. Thanks for the correction.
