I have had mine to 7000 rpm with no ill effects. I think shifting at 6200 is probably about right unless you can run out the finish with out shifting and them go for the overrive. Sure makes beautiful noise at 7000 though. Ed
Were you the IDIOT who cut the LT-1 hood on my wife's 70 roadster and exploded the clutch through the flooboards before putting on a poorly fitting scattershield? (Just kidding!)
First I thought, man what a bad carb fire this Vette must have went through, then after further study, I realized HEY! some EFFING idiot cut this hood to put a tunnel ram on the motor way back in the day (another reason why I know the Vette is a true 70 LT-1)
No, that wasn't me. I still have the car that I cut the hole in the hood for the tunnel ram ( the same one in my avatar). But it was an aftermarket hood. Oh, and I did explode a clutch in the same car right before I installed a blowproof bellhousing. I still have the LT-1 engine sitting in my garage.
sounds like your th400 needs a shift kit. Or leave it in 1st gear and hold it to the floor. It should dummy shift, and chirp the tires when going into second.
I have had a few friends that didnt realise the TH400 would do this, they went out and tried it on dirt roads... dumb move. Highway for the test, the motor will wrap and then bang 2nd. after it hits second, you can manually shift to drive for the finish.
When I want the car to go I manually shift and it does put down rubber going into 2nd and 3rd. The reason I started the thread is because I am having trouble getting the car to make good power past 4000 rpm.

The TH400 will upshift (with the shifter in 1st) to second around 5500 rpm, it is the governor that causes it.
It will happen. I have been in a few vehicles that have done it. hold it wide open and let it shift. We put one behind a 305 and it would hammer the 12bolt and chirp the tires all the time in that Jimmy.

Mine stays in first until I move the shifter to second....up to 6500 RPMs and beyond. I wouldn't depend on the trans shifting for you unless you're willing to risk grenading your motor.
someone has prob been into your tranny or the vac. module has been played with. I cant say it works for all trannys but the ones I have been in we held it to the floor and waited for the shift.

If I put my tranny in 'Drive' it short shifts at about 2000 ish rpm. I assume this is Not normal?
