Default Starter Dilemma

I'm just about finished with the chassis and geting ready to begin work o the body. I need only to bolt on the exhaust manifolds and exhaust pipes and mufflers, the starter and halfshafts. I ended up replacing the old and tired motor with a ZZ4 / Demon carb. I inadvertantly bought a starter for an automatic from Summit instead of one for a manual tranny. I couldn't understand why it would not seat properly into the bellhousing. Unfortunately it was about a year ago when I purchased it and no longer have the receipt. I was anxious to get the stupid starter installed so I could keep moving and ground some of the nose over the bendix down to get it to fit the bellhousing and finally got it in, only to discover that it would not bolt up properly. So out with the starter and online to order the correct one. There's the rub. It seems that I can't find a staggerd bolt starter for a manual transmission with staggered mounting for a 168 tooth flywheel. Upon further incvestigation, it seems that the ZZ4 block has a provision for either an inline bolt starter and staggered bolt starter. So my questions are:does anyone know if that is correct and has anyone had experience with the JEGs Prostarter? According to JEGS, it will work with either 153 or 168 tooth bellhousing. Any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated. I'd like to order the thing tomorrow but do not want to add to my collection of starters that won't fit. Look forward to your thoughts. j

ZZ4 is a late model engine so get a starter accordingly. Ask for a 2 bolt 'staggered aluminum nose starter...just make sure they give you a heavy duty starter, not a LD {light duty}.....

you could actually get the small GM gear reduction starter as the best choice as I believe a ZZ4 requires a metric starter...

John, I have a ZZ4 with 5 speed tranny. I originally purchased a starter from NAPA. The standard transmission starters have a smaller diameter steel nose, staggered bolt pattern versus the larger aluminum nose staggered bolt pattern for the automatic. I have since replaced that starter with a 3 HP mini starter which I highly recommend.

Thanks Binnie. I was looking at the on Summit's website. Looks like that heve one that is sort of universal in that it will work with either staggered and inline bolts and 168 and 153 tooth flywheels. Have you noticed if your ZZ4 block has both bolt hole patterns? j

John,

What bellhousing are you using ? I just went from auto to 4 speed and used the same starter.

John my ZZ4 block has both patterns. I used the staggered pattern for the GM starters and the adjacent pattern for the mini which I am running now.
