have an '80 l-48 mostly stock except new edlebrock intake and carb. I am noticing when its sits overnight and i start it, it fires right up, but if I dont let it run for like 5 mins. before I take off it sputters and backfires at low rpms. If you let it run for 5mins or so, it will run fine. Is this common? Also if I go somewhere and shut it off for say 30min to an hour, it starts hard, turns over alot and sometimes have to give it gas to start. There is a strange starting problem because if i shut it off and restart it within 10 min it starts fine or let it sit say overnight, fine. suggestions please! thanks
There should be a high idle setting on your choke that allows the engine warm up. I know when my car is ready to drive when I can tap the throttle and the idle will return to normal. Also, check on the passenger side exhaust manifold, there is a heat activated emissions thingy there that is a valve actuated by a rod coming from a vacuum regulator. Once I hooked mine back up, the engine ran much better when cooler.
As for the hard starting when warm, I do not have that problem. I can let the car heat soak and it will still fire instantaneously. There are a lot of people on the forum that talk about hard starting issues when hot, though. Do a search and maybe you will find an old thread with a lot of information. Good luck!
I have a Holley carb and Edelbrock Performer manifold on my 350.Was hard starting when cold and when it sat for 15 min or more.If i shut it down then restarted it within a few mins it fired right up! Found out the fuel was boiling over leaving the carb empty after shut down.I also noticed a strong fuel smell.Installed a carb spacer and heat shield which helped the problem.Alohas
