Does anyone know how hot the exhaust manifold should run? I just completed a engine rebuild and the exhaust manifold paint is smoking ? The engine is all original spec 350/270 HP. The paint is por exhaust manifold paint. I have a handheld pyrometer and the manifold peaked at 460 f before I shutdown the engine. Water temp is below 200 f.
A few weeks back when we ran my new 555 in a burn in stand using the original cast iron manifolds using an IR gun it measured between 450 & 570 depending on which cylinder you were looking at. I haven't re-measured it with the ceramic coated headers on yet. I would think there are so many variables to an engine build that it will vary a lot between motors.
Hi d,
My 71 350/270 manifolds painted with Cast Blast 1200 smoked for a little while after first start. The finish got a little lighter in color and bit less shiny.
Did the orange paint on the intake manifold darken at the cross-over? That usually happens too because of the extreme exhaust heat.
Regards,
Alan
Thanks for the numbers, I was not sure what to expect but it sounds like it is not a problem.
Alan,
Yes the orange has discolored between the center cylinders, that scared the heck out of me as well. Sometimes I think it would be better to NOT have a numbers matching car.
