Does the gear shift **** just unscrew from the shifter? I have tried everything to get mine off and I am afraid of wringing off the threaded end of the shifter mine is so tight. If It just unscrews I am going to have to cut mine off and clean up the threads to get the new **** on. thanks Skip

Thats what I thought, my Chevelle was the same way the threaded insert in the **** gets corroded to the shifter. I had to cut the **** and then get the threaded part off the shifter.
try a stap wrench made for electrical conduit, look hard but there are some made of leather so they will not mar your ****, if you use a pipe wrench wrap the know with a few layers of a towel and maybe it will not damage it, also spray with a penetrationing oil for a few days to try and lossin it up

If you can't find the above tool, Craftsman sells a version that uses a rubber strap.
Guys I have already tried a strap wrench lined with sandpaper and it slipped. I have already tried to get it off with a pipe wrench but I think I feel the threaded end start to give. I was just checking to see if there was a locknut or set pin or if it was threaded left handed. I am gonna take my high speed grinder and cut the **** just enough to get it to break in half and then I can get to the threaded insert of the ****. The **** looked so bad I am gonna get it off and use a new white one.
Hi Skip,
Have you tried using some heat? I would buy a pencil torch from h/freight about $2 buy the ronson butane fill tube at the mart. I would then double wrap a towel around the top of the shifter & have a good sized w/pump pliers handy.Heat the bottom of the gear shift from about 3 or 4 " with the pencil torch, heat it just enough to break it loose.Don't go over board. Have a little patience & you will get it to turn.BTW no left handed threads

Thanks Rob that gave me an idea I have some electrical heat tape that I can wrap around the **** plug it in for a couple of hours and try that, I have a pencil torch I use for shrink sleeving so if the tape won`t get it I will go that route.
i was about to resort to cutting and i got lucky with some vice grips. Chewed up the **** but got it off OK. New **** is only $20 so I was good with that...
GOT IT OFF, the heat tape didn`t work even with PB Blaster. I took a high speed grinder and made 2 cuts in the **** down to the threaded insert, took a big screwdriver and broke the **** in half to get if off. That left the threaded insert, I heated that cherry red and used vise grips with no luck. I took the high speed grinder and GENTLY cut the sleeve down 2 sides and across the top then heated it again and used the vise grips and when it let go it sounded like a green stick breaking. I took a die nut and chased the threads and it is good to go. Thanks for the ideas guys thats why I belong. Skip
