I am going to replace my starter and was hoping someone can confirm the one I have in my 69 is not the original one.
If it isnt, I will use it as a core.
On the starter I can read Delco Remy 1107365 6 C 8.
I assume it is a replacement part, but wanted to make sure.
thanks
jim
Hmm, I might want to send it out to get rebuilt. There were no shims.
Where do the shims go if they had them? Underneath the 2 bolts that hold it on?
Are local shops able to rebuild or would this be something to mail off if I did it?

Yes shims go under the 2 bolts, between the starter and block.
You should be able to find a local company to do it , but you most likely can do what needs to be done yourself. Those old starters most commonly need 4 brushes , 2 bushings , 1 solenoid and maybe a bendix.
The trickiest part is getting the brushes in correctly and the brush wires behind the pin. I'm sure there is some written instructions here on the forum. Check the timing sticky at the top of Tech,Barrys website should have something.
EDIT - Maybe Lars will have a tech paper on rebuilding a starter.

The date code translates to 1966 March 8, not 6 March 1968, so it's not the original starter. Might be a valuable core for a C2 guy or just rebuild it and keep using it.
Oh and the carb I had on my car when I got it was from a 74 truck also, 350 engine.
I had the 68 carb in a box, it was replaced cause of a leaky fuel inlet.
since it is not original and is seemingly a valuable C2 starter, do not core it out.. either keep it and rebuild it, or you could probably make some good money selling it to a C2 guy and buying you an autozone starter. a march 66 big block would probably date code fit a later 66 BB or an early 67 BB.

Should be worth "something" and it could be shockingly valuable. Not only would I not use it as a core, I also would not sell it to the first guy that sends me a pm offering to take it off my hands for $100.
(I have no idea what it might actually be worth)
Looks like there are several on Ebay. Not a corvette-only piece, so not super rare but still worth keeping.
