I'm doing some interior work while I have the dash out to put in my LED's and I thought I'd fix up my shifter plate. I'm having second thoughts about the gloss black paint I sprayed on there. Should this have been a flat black? I can redo today before I put everything back together. (I left the tape on the decal and lense)
I've used satin black in the past. Seems to be about the right amount of gloss.
Sprayed the whole panel, waited for the paint to dry for maybe a day, then used a razor blade to shave paint off the top edges where I wanted to expose chrome. Let it dry a bit more, then use fine steel wool to polish the chrome and remove any bits of paint left behind after shaving.
That looks fantastic oldsarge! It looks much more even than mine does. I'll go get some next chance I get.
How did you handle the chrome edges?
I actually used painters tape and masked it all out, any edges that needed triming, I used a razor blade to shape things and carefully removed the excess tape. For the lettering, I just painted over, then right after painting, as soon as it is dry, I took the flat edge of the razor blade, and carefully scraped off the paint over the letters and such.
