Default Early or Late

Can anyone tell me how to tell if I have an early 68 or late 68? Several parts are different.

Mine is 16018 built and I think it is late, but most of it was in a box when I got it, so...

Any year vette is neither totally early or totally late. There was no set dividing line because GM engineering was on-going thru the production year. It all depends on which component you are referring to. Look in the '68 AIM and see if the component in question was revised (hint: the drawing has a title block in the lower right hand corner, with revision dates.) If the component has not been revised, then your car is neither early nor late with respect to that component. If it was revised, and if your car was built before that date, then your car is likely early with respect to that component. If your car was built after that date, then it is likely late with respect to that component. Have I confused you enough yet?

No, you have been helpful. I assume the AIM is the Assemble Instruction Manual? I have one at home and will look tonight. I need to replace the shift boot on my 4 speed. The last one I bought gave me some linkage problems and both of the options is Corvette Central look about the same thickness.

"Early" and "late" almost always refer to specific running changes made on the assembly line.

My Baby is #416660; April 20, 1968.

you have a pretty late car, off the top of my head either later June or July of 68? If your question is the shift boot, you have the later one with 2 bellows. Do you need one? I have a decent original if not the CC ones are fine. Good luck, john

just got out the NCRS "Corvette Birthday Book"...your car rolled off the assembly line July 18th 1968 (give or take a day)...production only lasted 4 more weeks after that so I'd say you have a pretty late car.

On the trim tag at the door what you have? G15?
On my trim tag it's G14 look like C14 so its one day before yours.

C27 / G27 = Feb 27 car assembled.
I think a lot of G stamp in 68 look like C.
We are not alone with this C / G stamp.

It's the storage tray for the removable rear window. You store the rear window in there when it's out, instead of just leaving it lay on the rear compartment floor. Many cars are missing them, so your pretty lucky it's still there.

Storage tray for the pop out rear window.

...also on the front lip of the pass. side head its stamped v0208ihe, which ive found to mean v= flint mi. 02= feb. 08= 8th he= 300 hp
That's the engine ID code; It should read V0208HE. HE identifies the 300hp base engine with manual transmission.

G27 would be February 27, 1968 the date your car passed the station on the assembly line where the trim tag was attached. Jives with your engine assembly date of February 8th since engines were assembled at Flint and shipped to St. Louis before the cars were assembled.

There is a second number on that pad. You should find your VIN derivitive stamped there.
