I'm in the process of stripping the hood and am down to the layer of Epoxy Primer that was on the car. What is the best way to bring this down to the bare glass? What sand grit would be appropriate?
thanks
80 grit on a sanding block, I like the longer boards 16" until you get the primer off, use some finishing putty, then go 180 grit after that 220 grit. It will finish like glass.
why do you think all the epoxy has to be removed? if it didn't come-out smooth, just sand the rough spots and re-spray (of course sand the entire hood for better adhesion). use the coats of epoxy as blocking coats. and if the glass needs to be repaired, the epoxy resin will bond to the epoxy primer.
My painter wants to start over due to a bubble that keeps popping up..We want to get down to the glass and give it a good clean/prep in case there is some cantaminates.
Anyone have a good method to remove the layer of SPI Epoxy primer?
start with 80 grit, when you start to see glass, go to 150 or 180. don't worry about going too deep, a thin layer of filler will rebuild the contours. if there's oil in the glass (someone went crazy with pb blaster ?) you'll have to remove a much deeper layer of material and then build it back to the proper contour. if you try to use solvents to clean the oil, all you'll succeed in doing is spreading the oil deeper into the glass.
