Ill try not to bother you to long . my yolks need re-placed Im an ok spanner turner but never rear-end work, other than a new pumpkin gasket.
That being said would you take the rear end out to put in yolks
in A car has 51,000 miles. when I had the pumpkin off the first time it seemed like the clips werent far from the end . they must have broken or something with the car jacked up the half shafts move in and out about A half an inch sliding in and out (side to side)of the pumpkin.
Thanks in advance
Lonnie
I'm not Gary, but yes, you really should take it out. You have to take the cover off anyway so you're only 1 bolt and a drive shaft away from taking the diff out.
Most of the metal bits worn off the yokes will be lodged between the two pinion bearings so you need to take the pinion out and clean. Also, replace all seals. Even though they don't leak now they are likely to leak after disassembly/re-assembly. Trust me, I know.
Also while it's out the posi clutch packs should be replaced and the new packs shimmed.
Good news is that unless the bearings are damaged, keep them. I'm still on original bearings with well over 100K miles and they are like new.

Sounds like youve done a couple, Im great at cleaning stuff anyway
so while Im at it Ill take some before and after Pics. thanks again.
You do the clutches because ,while your there why not. What about setting end play?????? ArGGGGGGGGGg
End play of what? The clutches? The procedure to shim the clutches is to install the clutch on one side, then 3 spiders and the cross shaft. Wedge a screwdriver between cross shaft and spider on the clutch compressing the clutch. You have the shims right when the side spiders has just a hair (a thousandth or two) of play.
BTW, I had to redo mine because I made the big mistake of buying junk parts from "Fast Corvette", now renamed "Duntov motors" in Dallas.
