Try asking for an alternator belt for a 72 454 and then telling him that his computer is wrong when he hands you something that is 3 times longer than it should be.
I always loved going and telling them what part I wanted and when they ask me what it was going on I would say a 59 Austin Healey and watch them go blank
Pablo at auto zone said it would be $150 for a pinion seal for my 76's differential. My dad next to me calmly said "try again" which Pablo insisted that was the it. Another worker jumped in and pulled it up for $13 or so. Having the part number in hand before going is a must from then on.
I gave up on auto zone after they tried to tell me they didn't stock plug wires for a small block. Luckily Speedway Motors has it's distribution center and parts counter in town. For a buck or so more they have almost everything I could ever want on hand. And people behind the counter who know WTF they're talking about.
That's why I look up the part# before going down there.
I confuse the heck out of 'em when I tell them I have a 77 with a 454, They always get this confused look in their eyes when they try to look it up on the computer.
that is why i always do my research (part numbers) on the internet before i go in. LOL heck our cars are probably older than the kids standing behind the counter at autozone or pepboys.
I walked into Autozone w/ the spark-plug in hand. Here's the number- I need eight of them. The guy behind the counter told me he couldn't find it - and needed to know the make/model/year....
