Default Lower Radiator Hose

For some reason I always thought the lower radiator hoses had the steel coil in them. My 79 doesn't, is this correct? Car wants to run a little warm (220)on the highway 70-75 mph w/ac on. Thanks Ed

I believe that originally the hoses had the coil wire in them due to the soft rubber used ..now with composites and tech advances there is no need for the wire to prevent the hose collapsing..

Get the one with the wire unless the hose you have is very stiff, the wire keeps the hose from collapsing and squeezing off the flow at high rpm

Oh yah I think My brain tried to block that part out. I remember now it took quite a bit of screaming and a few choice words to make it go on.

Well I checked with one vender and was told that 76-79 (strange)didn't call for a spring in the hose. Of course I do want a hose that is formed to fit and was wondering how different they would be from previous years? ED

74 has a coil...I did mine last month and all the heater hoses as well. That lower one is a PITA.

Wouldn't a 74 work on a 79? Whats the difference? Ed

That's one of those jobs that made it to my "do this in the winter if you can" list. That way the garage windows are closed, and my wife worries less about the neighbors hearing me speaking in tongues.

I replaced my parts store lower hose on my 79 with a correct reproduction from Zip. The parts store on did not have a spring, the one from Zip did. Zip's was more expensive. I have had a similar problem on my 79, it will get up to around and sometimes slightly over 220 on the highway in the summer heat. If I slow down from 75 to say 60, the temp will drop to a more acceptable level. Unfortunately, the new hose with the spring in it made no noticeable difference. I wish I knew what to do next. The system has been flushed many times, all the seals are in place, the timing is correct, the radiator was recently out for repair, and the shop said the flow is fine. I'd love to pony up for a DeWitt's aluminum radiator, but it's just not in the budget any time soon.

Thanks C3 4ME for your reply, hmmm, sounds like I could be throwing good money away. Maybe we can figure something else out. Ed

In the late 70's GM offered this lower radiator extension to bring more air into the radiator, particularly at speed. I picked one up back then for my '77 for about $20 and it fits right over the original spoiler. It does a pretty effective job. It's made of multi-ply rubber but is flexible enough that curbs won't damage it.

When I bought my '73 about 10 years later they were still available although the price had gone up a bit. I don't think GM carries them anymore, but Dr Rebuild did the last time I checked, It may be worth a try if the rest of the cooling system is in good condition.

Good luck... GUSTO

Hey GUSTO, spoiler looks great (and of course the car). Maybe that's what I need but not rubber. Looked on Dr.Rebuild site and I think it's the "L" for 49.95 now. Thanks for your help Ed

I never owned a 79, but according to this they do look a little bit different.

Yes I can see a little difference must have been to get around something else. BTW I called Dr. Rebuild about a spoiler extention and her words were--out of stock and discontinued hmmm!, I guess they need to update their catalog more often. Thanks Steve Ed

No thanks not just yet, it is a black hard plastic extention that attaches to it so as to put more fresh air to the radiator. Thanks Ed
