I've been driving my brothers 1971 vert for a couple days. Last night when I parked the car after driving for about 2 hours, I noticed a "sizzling" sound coming from behind the driver's seat. I opened the battery compartment and it was the battery making the noise. It was extremely hot to the touch also. The battery is an Optima Red Top battery.
Any ideas what the heck is going on with the battery?
Thanks for you thoughts!

Reason: typo...
I don't trust the Optima battery's. I've had several that seem to ask the alternator for full charge when the battery doesn't need it.
Check the charging system and its fine , replace battery and system is back to normal.
I can't help but think these battery's are wasteful. They seem to loose their charge just sitting and then the alternator has to constantly recharge them.
Definitely not sold on them.
Try putting in another battery from one of your other cars and see how the system acts.

They always seem problematic. Don't know why so many people spend the big bucks for them.
I always just buy the cheapest batteries that fit, usually a marine type, usually last 6 years and problem free.

Sears Die Hard second Vet second die hard I dont un-hookem in the winter and it fires right up in the Spring.
Get the charging system tested before and after installing a new battery. You don't want to fry a new battery if you have a charging system problem. If the battery is the problem...fine...just verify.
I'm not sure of the temperatures you normally experience where you are in NM, but my in-laws live in Phoenix. When I was there visiting I was amazed at how many tire and battery stores there are. My dad-in-law says that due to the heat car batteries only last about two years, no matter how expensive they are. If that's the case, there's no reason to spend a lot of money on a battery if its service life is so short.
