so put an edelbrock 1406 carb on 3 months ago and its been working great. now the electric choke isnt working. got power to it, called edelbrock set the choke over the phone with tech. went out next day, choke wouldnt close. any one have suggestions on my next move? thanks tj
I put an Edelbrock 1806 carb on my car a few weeks ago, along with the Edelbrock Performer EPS aluminum manifold . My electric choke has power as well but doesn't work. I haven't had time to look into it so I would be interested in what may be learned from this post. I can manually put the choke on the high idle stop and set the idle but when the car is cold it never trips to the high cam stop. I've tried all kinds of settings but it still doesn't work.
If I have a chance to get into it and find the issue I'll post what I find.
If memory serves me correctly, the electric coil of the choke heats up and only serves to open the choke. Sounds like your problem is with closing the choke when the engine is cold. In order to activate the choke and close it, you have to depress the gas pedal before starting the engine. Depressing the pedal releases a lockout and allows the choke plate to close. Then when you start the engine, the electric coil in the choke heats up and gradually opens the choke. If your choke releases when the pedal is depressed but doesn't close, then your heater coil setting isn't tight enough. Good luck!

Thanks for the info guys. I always push on the accelerator with the key on before starting to release the choke. I can't seem to find a setting on the choke that will close the plate and set the linkage to the high idle cam stop. It stays on the base idle cam. I can manually move it to the high idle.
I had to remove all the connecting rods on the carb to get at the rods and jets for cleaning. Yes, my brand new carb injested gunkies the first day. Maybe i hooked up the rods incorrectly or something.
I like the idea of sharing fixes but I don't see as much of that as I would like. I took a close look at my new carb/choke situation and found that the cam on the driver's side that rides on the high idle stop screw had a pretty rough surface from the stamping process. I used a fine file to smooth the surface and remove some of the roughness and the cam no longer hangs up on the screw. It rides smoothly and now reaches the high idle portion of the cam. All is good now.

I'll take another look.
Post a few pics?
I've got the 1406 on my '81, and I'd be happy to compare your pics to my linkages, and post pics of my setup if you'd like.
