I have a 72.. Had it about a month now. I had driven a few and had a good idea what the feel should be. I drove the car home after buying it and had a long trip to bond. When I got back, I had the steering box rebuilt. There was 1 inch to the left and right in the wheel with melted grease dripping out the bottom. Now that it's rebuilt, there is ZERO play in the wheel. Now, my "compared to what" is my Saab 9-3 and my Jag S-type. I would say that the steering should feel like any other older chevy. It's not exactly crisp but not too vague.. just sort of normal.

I should add that these cars are happiest going straight and fast. Turning is a distraction.

Just to follow up on the steering issue, I had the steering box adjusted, a simple 5 minute fix, and you would not believe the difference....like night and day. Anyone that has play in the wheel, it can be adjusted easily.
Thanks for all that responded, I was getting nervous as I had replaced most of the components discussed.
