Default Differential problems

I started pulling apart the rear suspension on my 79 to change the bushings when I realized the differential was leaking. The yokes on the sides have a lot of play and the seals are leaking. After pulling out the differential and opening it I could see one snap ring was gone and the other is ready to go. I have been searching the forum and came across the thread by stinger12 on how to rebuild it and after reading it I realized I might be in a little over my head. Can I slide the yokes out and slide new ones in or does the whole thing need to be rebuilt? If it needs to be rebuilt where can i get this done and how much should I expect to pay.

You can slide the yokes out, change the side seals, and slide in new yokes and snap rings.
All at home - with just a pair of snap-ring pliers. I did mine myself.[IMG][/IMG]

I ordered mine from Duntov racing out of Texas $218.00 for the pair of yokes $10.oo rear end seal two bottles of additive and top of with
90/w put in the new seals, yokes and gasket put it all back together should take a total of 6 hrs. 3 apart and 3 back in. Al painted up of course. And then my rear end will not clunk when I go around the corner!

Clams is right you can do it!!!!

When I slide the yokes out is there anything I should look out for? Marking the location of the yoke? Will any parts or shim move or does it just slide out and the new one side right in.

The location does not matter since they spin at different speeds when turning so no problem. When you do pull them out nothing will fall out but you might try and find the snap ring if it is still in there. I would try and flush it out as best as possible because you do have some fine metal particles floating around in there. You might have to tap the yokes out depending on how mushromed over the ends are but even if you need a good sized tapper you will be OK. Pretty tough to hurt the diff.

Just a suggestion...While you're in there, make sure that the yokes moving in and out didn't beat on the pinion shaft, and elongate the holes in the carrier, that the shaft fits into.

I have been fighting with the differential all morning the ends of the yokes are mushroomed over and they will not pull out. I have ground off as much as I can reach but I can't get to the rest. How do I get these things out?

Find a way to muckle a slide-hammer to the outside of the yokes and rip 'em out. Since they are deformed and damaged, they are now much softer than thier holes in the Diff. and will not harm the Diff.

Make sure you clean everything WELL befor reassembly.
