Damn just got my first sidepipe burn... This is one club i dont care to be in... The only thing i can think of is what if im at the store and some one come along and touches the pipe like a small kid or something. Id feel soo bad. Any experience something like that?
That's common! You need to get a hold of Dean and get yourself a set of SteelShields. It's a great product and he's a supporting vendor. Do a search - there is LOTS of reading on "burns", "sidepipes", and "shields".
been there done that... circa 1977...bell bottomed polyester pants with hole 6" round as well..... at time the hole in the pants was worse than the burn. Man - that material disintegrated !
Thats why I have already bought my shields from cobrastuff. I havent even ordered the pipes yet but I know the first time the wife touches a leg to a hot pipe it will be all over. As far as a kid touching your hot pipe. I am just the jerk that would tell the parents serves your brat right for touching my car. This is your fault for not raising him right.
Never hit the sidepipes, but spent most of the late '70s with header burns on my arms.......
I was on the lake working a jet boat that I just installed nitrous on, touched the header with inside of my elbow. Thought I was gonna cry !
Uncovered sidepipes are a lawsuit waiting to happen.
I'm going to keep my sidepipes uncovered as long as possible.. I've burned myself twice, but the second time was because the car was rolling and I had to jump in to stop it. I'm extremely careful to keep any passengers from burning their legs though, and so far have a 100% success rate.

has anyone ever been sued because of that? thats crazy..
I hear these stories about bad burns all the time, the worse part is they don't completely disappear for years. Friends, wifes and kids are the ones that usually get the bad burns.
Protective shields are the way to go no matter which brand or style you choose.
Had a friend get sued by a girl he was dating after she got burned on the pipes of his motorcycle. You can definately bet it would happen in today's lawyer rich environment. Bike or car.
I keep a small bottle of aloe vera jel in my car for that just in case case.

She will win because the prosecution will show that she had no reasonable requirement to exercise extra caution when negotiating getting in and out of a passenger car used for conveyance of individuals from one point to another. The hot, 200-degree+ sidepipes represented an extreme risk to individual safety during routine activity in and around a "passenger car". Skin roasts at those temperatures. A good lawyer would show an egg being fried or a steak being cooked on those "awful" header-type side-pipes. Screwed, but true.
Just like when the old lady spilled the MacDonalds coffee - she had no reason to suspect that the coffee was a million degrees heat versus 'normal' coffee temperature. Therefore she had no reason to excercise extra special caution when handling the coffee cup.
Notice the similarity - they both "burned" a person. The absolute, most horrid of all injuries due to negligence. Except for losing an eye, finger, arm, etc. Those are bad too.

I work on some attorneys vettes. Burns from side exhaust, burns from igniter tailpipes on hotrods at shows, broken or bruised shins from trailer hitches, eyes poked and heads gashed by ladders hanging off work trucks, cut faces from extended mirrors , on and on and on. Most insurance company's just settle.
( I don't know if this has anything to do with this but when I worked at a Cadillac dealer I remember a thing about mirrors and if they extended more than 1" beyond the body they had to be breakaway type.)

I really do hope you are one big bad SOB that has a CCW permit if you actually said that with a badly burned 3 year old laying on the ground next to your car screaming.
