I don't see why the hood should interfere. I have a '71. It has a reworked Lars dissy. I used to work on my old HEI unit on my '78 Trans Am. It was ok to maintain to be honest.

1. With an HEI, your tach won't work, unless you're talking about buying one of the aftermarket tach-drive HEIs.
2. You cannot use the stock resistor wire for power to the HEI. You need to run a dedicated 12-gauge wire from an "IGN" source at the fusebox and bypass the stock resistor wire.
3. You can't use your stock distributor shielding.
4. You have to use the HEI plug wires to fit the HEI cap.
5. You'll need to re-curve and properly set up the timing curve on the HEI if you hope to match the performance of the stock distributor.
