Anyone know how to find the key codes to a 1978 Vet? Lost my keys and would much rather find the key codes than have keys made from scratch, much cheaper.
I just had to replace my key switch due to lost keys. Its a breeze if you know what your doing. Of course I didnt know what I was doing. If it comes to the point you have to do it, I`ll be glad to tell you what I`ve learned.
I think he's looking for the code to CUT the key.
I know the dealer invoices that are available($50 last I saw) had a spot for the code, but they white it out, probably for security.
MAYBE, you could talk them into leaving the code visible, but doubt it.
I wanna see how this works out for you. I work at a chevy dealership and the parts dept. said they couldnt cut any key before 1990 something by the vin.
The locks should have the code stamped on them they would look like
E725 or F123 for the ignition using Blank B46. The Door key would be
G123 or H987 using a B-47 blank. Since there are 2000 combinations for each key you need to remove the locks to read the codes. If you have never done it you may want to see a locksmith since the ignition lock can be tricky. Fortunately for me the door and ignition key are the same up to 1973.
If you have to remove the locks anyway,
For around 25 bucks you can get a brand new ign cyl lock with 2 keys and also 2 new door cyl locks with 2 keys, install and you're ready to roll.
Locksmith making new keys night be more expensive.
